DOZENS FLEE KATSINA COMMUNITY AS BANDITS INTENSIFY ATTACKS
Written by Olakunle Oke on January 16, 2024
Fear has gripped Nahuta village in Katsina State’s Batsari Local Government Area, driving residents to flee in droves following relentless attacks by armed bandits. The latest exodus began just yesterday, January 15th, after another harrowing assault shattered their sense of security. Children and families are being prioritized in this desperate search for safety elsewhere.
Meanwhile, in a glimmer of hope, the Nigerian Military Joint Task Force Northwest Operation, Hadarin Daji, managed to repel an attack on a joint military camp yesterday. Troops covering Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara states stood their ground against the bandits. Sadly, this isolated success does little to quell the anxieties gripping the region as news of escalating bandit attacks and abductions continues to spread nationwide.
Nahuta’s plight serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing human cost of banditry in Nigeria. The exodus speaks volumes about the desperation villagers feel, forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods in pursuit of the most basic human need: security. Until concerted efforts are made to effectively combat these armed gangs and restore safety to affected communities, the exodus from Nahuta is likely just the beginning of a larger displacement tragedy.
