Written by on July 2, 2024

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down approximately 100 shops in Enugu State’s Ogbete Main Market for allegedly selling suspected fake beverages.

Martins Iluyomade, the Director of NAFDAC in the Southeast region, said the agency took action following a raid conducted on Monday.

During the operation, NAFDAC officials seized a truckload of adulterated products and arrested four traders suspected of involvement in the sale of the counterfeit beverages.

Iluyomade, who is a pharmacist, emphasised that the crackdown was necessary to protect unsuspecting consumers from consuming harmful products.

He said the arrested suspects are currently under investigation and will face charges in court upon completion of the inquiry.
Iluyomade reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to eliminating unwholesome, substandard, fake, and adulterated products from the market.
He noted that the operation was conducted in collaboration with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, State Security Services and the Nigerian Army, underscoring the seriousness of the agency’s mandate to ensure public health and safety.
