The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the utilization of unspent funds to revitalize Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. This move aims to address the sector’s challenges, including decayed infrastructure, poor facilities, and outdated curricula.
The union emphasizes the need for proper allocation of resources to education, citing insufficient funding as a major conflict between the government, working masses, and university students 3. ASUU also stresses the importance of resolving disputes over workers’ rights, salaries, and benefits to prevent strikes by academic and non-academic staff.
Some of the key challenges facing Nigeria’s tertiary education sector include:
– Insufficient Allocation of Resources: Inadequate infrastructure, poor facilities, and outdated curricula
– Corruption and Mismanagement: Allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds within the education sector
– Poor Living Conditions: Inadequate healthcare, lack of support services for students, and poor living conditions in hostels and academic buildings
– Government Interference: Government interference in university affairs, appointments, and policies
By addressing these challenges, ASUU hopes to improve the quality of education and student performance in Nigerian universities.
