Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana has strongly criticized the prosecution of protesters associated with the #EndBadGovernance movement, emphasizing that such actions violate the 1999 Constitution .As a vocal advocate for human rights and democratic principles, Falana stresses that the right to peaceful assembly and protest is fundamental to democratic societies and safeguarded by international law.
Falana highlighted the recent arrest of seven Polish students who were taking part in an exchange program at Bayero University, Kano, for simply taking photographs during the protest .He noted that they may be charged with espionage to give the impression that the protests were instigated by foreign interest groups.
Falana urged the federal government to provide adequate notice before arraigning those arrested, allowing them to contact the Nigerian Bar Association and their family members to make arrangements for their defense.
This development is part of a broader concern about the rising use of treason charges against protesters in Nigeria, which Falana has condemned .
The human rights lawyer has consistently advocated for the protection of democratic rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.
