Telecoms Tariff Hike: Subscribers, Labour Unions Gear Up for Showdown with NCC

Written by on January 24, 2025

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to meet with telecommunications subscribers today to discuss the proposed tariff hike, amidst growing opposition from labour unions and consumers. The meeting comes as labour unions prepare for a nationwide protest over the planned increase, which they argue will exacerbate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) had earlier announced a 40% tariff hike, citing rising operational costs. However, the move was met with widespread criticism from subscribers and labour unions, who claim that the increase will further burden already struggling Nigerians.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on a nationwide protest if the tariff hike is implemented. The NLC argues that the increase will lead to a surge in the cost of living, and worsen the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

“We will not accept any increase in tariffs, especially at a time when Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet,” said NLC President, Ayuba Wabba. “We will mobilize our members and other stakeholders to resist this increase, and we will not back down until the NCC reverses its decision.”

The NCC has invited subscribers to today’s meeting to discuss the proposed tariff hike and its implications. The commission has assured that it will take into consideration the views of all stakeholders before making a final decision.

However, subscribers and labour unions remain apprehensive about the outcome, fearing that the tariff hike will further burden already struggling Nigerians. Many have taken to social media to express their opposition to the increase, using hashtags such as #NoToTariffHike and #NCCMustListen.

As the meeting holds today, all eyes will be on the NCC, as subscribers and labour unions await the commission’s decision. Will the NCC heed the concerns of subscribers and labour unions, or will it push ahead with the tariff hike? Only time will tell.
