NLC Rejects 50% Telecom Tariff Hike, Insists on 5% or Nothing

Written by on January 30, 2025

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently opposed the proposed 50% increase in telecom tariffs, insisting that it will only accept a maximum increase of 5%.

The NLC’s stance comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced plans to increase telecom tariffs by 50% due to the rising cost of living and inflation.

However, the NLC has argued that the proposed hike will further exacerbate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, who are already struggling to make ends meet.

The labour union has threatened to mobilize its members for a nationwide protest if the NCC goes ahead with the proposed tariff hike.

The NLC’s President, Ayuba Wabba, emphasized that the union will not accept any increase above 5%, stressing that the government and telecom operators must prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over profits.

“The NLC will not stand idly by while Nigerians are further impoverished by unnecessary price increases,” Wabba said.

The development has sparked concerns among telecom subscribers, who are already grappling with high costs of living and economic uncertainty.
