The Federal Government has launched a bold initiative to train 100,000 Nigerian artisans in 2025 under the newly unveiled Skill-Up Artisan Super Programme. Spearheaded by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), the programme aims to align Nigerian artisans with international standards and eliminate quack practices in vocational fields.
A Push for Global-Standard Skilled Labour
Speaking at the inauguration of the South-West Secretariat of the Association of Nigeria Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT) in Akure, ITF Director-General Afiz Ogun explained that the programme is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic reform agenda. It seeks to:
Improve the technical skills of workers such as mechanics, tailors, barbers, and electricians.
Offer training that leads to global competitiveness.
Instill a culture of dignity in labour among Nigerian youths and tradespeople.
This initiative builds on the success of 2024’s artisan training, which saw 29,000 individuals certified in various trades.
Encouraging Industry Participation
Mr. Ogun encouraged artisans to embrace the opportunity for professional development, adding that the FG remains committed to tackling unemployment by investing in vocational skills.
ASNAT State Chairman, Babatunde Oyeleye, echoed this sentiment, calling on artisans to register and prepare for the training, which is expected to enhance both income potential and quality of service delivery in the informal sector.
The Skill-Up programme marks another step in Nigeria’s journey toward economic empowerment through skilled workforce development.
