Nigeria Targets Zero Gas Flaring by 2030 — NUPRC Unveils Commercialization Strategy

Nigeria is taking decisive steps toward ending gas flaring by the year 2030, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The Commission’s Chief Executive, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, reaffirmed the target while addressing participants at the International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science and Technology.

Represented by Dr. Kelechi Onyekachi Ofoegbu, Komolafe explained that the NUPRC’s gas commercialization initiatives are designed to capture and utilize flared gas for power generation, industrial use, and clean cooking. This move, he said, aligns with Nigeria’s broader energy transition agenda and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
He emphasized that sustainable governance of natural resources would not only attract fresh investment but also uplift local communities and foster economic diversification.
Despite Nigeria’s vast oil and gas reserves, millions still lack access to modern energy, making gas commercialization a vital step in bridging that gap.
As part of the plan, the NUPRC is collaborating with both local and international investors to deploy new technologies capable of converting waste gas into productive energy sources — creating jobs while protecting the environment.
