2027: Gen. Musa Best Choice as Tinubu’s Running Mate – Jide Ojo

Written by on February 19, 2026

A Development Consultant, Author, Columnist and Public Affairs Analyst, Mr. Jide Ojo, has weighed in on growing speculations surrounding a possible change of running mate by Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ojo made this known while speaking with Charles Ideho on Feedback with Chasideho, an evening Sunday programme on Jordan 105.5FM, Lagos.

According to the analyst, the current Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (retd), would remain the best possible choice should the President decide to replace his Vice President in order to address concerns over the Muslim-Muslim ticket and balance it with a Muslim-Christian combination.

While noting that the speculation may not be well-founded, Ojo said political realities often evolve as elections approach.

He argued that General Musa’s leadership profile, national appeal and professional track record make him a strong and stabilising figure. Ojo highlighted several achievements since Musa assumed office as Minister of Defence, including:

*Strengthened coordination among the Armed Forces and other security agencies, leading to more joint operations against insurgents and bandits.

*Intensified offensives against terrorist groups in the North-East and North-West, resulting in the neutralisation of key insurgent commanders and the rescue of kidnapped victims.

*Improved civil-military relations through community engagement initiatives aimed at restoring public confidence in security institutions.

Renewed focus on troop welfare, logistics and morale, including better operational support and strategic repositioning of military formations.

*Enhanced collaboration with regional and international partners in the fight against terrorism and transnational crimes.

Ojo stated that beyond security credentials, Musa’s perceived neutrality and professional background could appeal to a broad spectrum of Nigerians across religious and ethnic divides.

“Should the President consider a strategic adjustment for 2027, General Musa brings competence, discipline and national acceptability to the table,” Ojo said.

However, he maintained that discussions about a possible change in running mate remain speculative at this stage, as no official statement has been made by the Presidency.

Political observers note that permutations ahead of 2027 are still at an early stage, but conversations around ticket balancing and electoral strategy are gradually gaining traction within political circles.
