FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO SUSPEND DEGREE CERTIFICATES FROM KENYA, UGANDA, OTHERS, SAYS MINISTER

Written by on January 4, 2024

Following concerns about the validity of certain foreign degrees, the Nigerian government has announced it will broaden its ongoing review of accreditation and evaluation procedures. This expansion will include institutions in Uganda, Kenya, and Niger Republic, alongside the previously announced investigation into certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.

This decision stemmed from a recent undercover report highlighting issues with swift degree acquisition in specific institutions. The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding rigorous academic standards and protecting the integrity of educational qualifications in Nigeria.

While acknowledging the challenges students may face in navigating complex international educational options, Mr. Mamman stressed the importance of individual responsibility. He stated that knowingly pursuing degrees from unaccredited institutions constitutes an intentional violation of established regulations and cannot be solely attributed to victimhood.
