PLATEAU KILLINGS CONTINUE DESPITE 24-HOUR CURFEW

Written by on January 24, 2024

A pall of fear hangs over Mangu town in Plateau state, as the 24-hour curfew imposed by Governor Celeb Mutfwang after Tuesday’s fresh killings seems powerless to quell the ongoing violence. Residents report continued horror, with gunmen storming communities, firing indiscriminately, and setting houses ablaze.

Despite the restrictions on movement, attackers reportedly reached several areas, leaving a trail of carnage in their wake. The brutal targeting of civilians reached new heights as the Sunnah Islamiya School along Gindiri Road fell victim to the arson, adding to the growing list of destroyed homes and shattered lives.

Governor Mutfwang’s swift imposition of the curfew had instilled a flicker of hope, but its failure to stop the bloodshed raises deeper concerns about the effectiveness of security measures and the underlying causes of the conflict. The brazen disregard for the curfew underlines the urgency for immediate action to protect vulnerable communities and restore peace to Mangu.

With every life lost and every structure torched, the human cost of this ongoing violence grows heavier. The silence of the streets under curfew is itself a chilling testament to the fear that grips the town. Now, a desperate question hangs in the air: what further steps are needed to break this cycle of violence and bring safety back to Mangu?
