Sanwo-Olu Launches CAP Regulatory Framework to Prevent Building Collapses in Lagos

Written by on March 10, 2025

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled the Certified Accreditors’ Programme (CAP), a regulatory framework aimed at preventing building collapses and promoting sustainable urban development in Lagos. The governor launched the program at an event in Ikeja, emphasizing its role in safeguarding lives and property, while also driving economic growth and job creation.

The CAP regulatory framework integrates private sector expertise to strengthen building safety, attract investment, and enhance urban aesthetics. Sanwo-Olu urged accredited firms to demonstrate integrity and professionalism, positioning Lagos as a model for sustainable urban development. The program’s implementation is expected to mitigate the risk of building collapses, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property in Lagos, including the tragic Ikoyi building collapse in 2021.

The CAP framework is designed to ensure that buildings in Lagos are constructed and maintained to the highest safety standards. The program will achieve this by:

– Certifying competent professionals and firms to conduct building inspections and audits

– Establishing clear guidelines and standards for building design, construction, and maintenance

– Enhancing enforcement and compliance with building regulations

– Promoting public awareness and education on building safety

By implementing the CAP framework, the Lagos State Government aims to reduce the incidence of building collapses, protect the lives and property of residents, and promote a safer and more sustainable built environment. The program is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy, as it will attract investments, create jobs, and enhance the overall quality of life in Lagos.

The launch of the CAP framework is a significant step towards achieving the Lagos State Government’s vision of creating a safe, sustainable, and prosperous city. The program demonstrates the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens, while also promoting economic growth and development.
