A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck northern Vanuatu on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Authorities have issued a warning that small tsunami waves have been detected by ocean monitoring equipment.
The quake occurred at a depth of 22 kilometers, approximately 300 kilometers north of the capital city, Port Vila. The USGS has indicated that the likelihood of casualties and damage from the tremor is low, as the epicenter is located near a sparsely populated cluster of islands.
Despite the low risk of significant damage, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has urged residents living in coastal areas near the quake’s epicenter to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
