In a decisive move, President Bola Tinubu has directed ailing Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to transfer power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Due to the governor’s weakened condition, the transfer of power will be facilitated through an electronic signature (e-signature).
This directive follows a crucial meeting convened by the President on Monday to address the leadership crisis in Ondo. Akeredolu’s prolonged absence from office since July 2023 has sparked concerns and raised questions about state governance. This marks the second meeting facilitated by President Tinubu to address the growing anxiety surrounding the governor’s health.
The decision to transfer power via e-signature comes in response to Akeredolu’s weakened condition, which prevents him from physically signing documents. This pragmatic approach ensures a smooth transition of power while prioritizing the governor’s health and well-being.
Mounting pressure from civil society organizations and political institutions played a significant role in driving this decision. Their calls for mass protests across Ondo State served as a powerful voice demanding accountability and transparency.
With this directive, President Tinubu has taken decisive action to address the leadership vacuum in Ondo State. The transfer of power to Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa will ensure that the state continues to function effectively while Governor Akeredolu receives the necessary medical attention.
