Happy democracy day, fellow Nigerian. May 29 made it 25 years of being under democratic rule. On this basis, the democracy day was celebrated yearly on May 29 until six years ago on June 7, 2018.
On that day, President Buhari changed the date, from the earlier May 29 which marked the entry into the fourth republic on May 29, 1999 to June 12.
Ever since then, June 12 has been set aside by the federal government as Democracy Day.
It stands as a memorial of the June 12, 1993 elections which is thought by most Nigerians to be the most free and fair election ever conducted.
Meanwhile, The Patriots, a group of eminent leaders of thought in Nigeria, in collaboration with the June 12 Pro-Democracy Movement of Nigeria, is reported to hold a rally at Alausa Ikeja, Lagos, today June 12, 2024 in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy day.
The theme of the rally is “Securing the Future of Nigeria through a Democratic People’s Constitution”.
Hosted by former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations and Chairman of The Patriots, Chief Emeka Anyaoku. Other dignitaries present include Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Atiku Abubakar of PDP, Peter Obi of LP, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega.
