Boniface under investigation for a nasty gesture.

Written by on August 20, 2024

The German outlet Weltfussball reported on Monday that the German Football Association has launched an investigation into Nigeria international Victor Boniface’s actions during Bayer Leverkusen’s Super Cup triumph against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.

According to reports, Boniface showed the opposing players his outstretched left middle finger as he rushed by them after the final whistle.

The 23-year-old scored in the 11th minute before being replaced for tactical reasons after Martin Terrier received a red card in the first half.

Tobias Stieler, the center referee, stated in his report that he did not witness the alleged gesture, allowing the DFB’s control committee to investigate the event.

If the striker is proven guilty, the Super Cup might have far-reaching consequences.

While no physical evidence or television video confirms the incident, Stuttgart players insisted that the Super Eagles striker’s gesture was insulting.

Boniface was then given a yellow card in the 80th minute for dissent while on the bench in response to a VAR decision that went against his team.

Since joining the club, the Nigerian has played a key role in Leverkusen’s success, leading them to a cup double last season.

In 34 appearances across all competitions, the Akure-born attacker scored 21 goals and assisted 10 times.

Boniface was voted Rookie of the Year last season following a fantastic maiden campaign in the German top flight, which culminated with Bayer Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga.
