President Bola Tinubu announced that his administration is making significant strides in the fight against corruption, highlighting the bolstering of anti-corruption agencies and the implementation of the ECOWAS protocol against corruption as key achievements.
Speaking at the 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), themed “Strengthening Regional Cooperation in the Fight Against Corruption,” Tinubu emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the independence and proper funding of anti-corruption bodies. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event in Abuja, Tinubu outlined the steps his administration has taken to empower these agencies.”Corruption remains one of the most significant obstacles to the progress and prosperity of our nations. It undermines the fabric of our societies, erodes public trust, and impedes the equitable distribution of resources,” Tinubu stated.
“As leaders, we are responsible for confronting this challenge with unwavering resolve and concerted actions.”Tinubu noted that over the past year, his government has prioritized strengthening Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies by not interfering in their activities and ensuring they are adequately funded. He recommended this approach as a template for other West African nations.
Furthermore, the President stressed the importance of implementing the ECOWAS protocol against corruption, which is designed to enhance institutional cooperation for regional unity. He called on member states to renew their commitment to the anti-corruption cause and move beyond mere rhetoric to concrete actions.”I am pleased to note the progress we have made in this endeavour. The constructive collaboration between NACIWA and ECOWAS has yielded tangible results, fostering greater cooperation and information sharing among our national anti-corruption agencies,” Tinubu added.
