CANADIAN GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES EXAMINATION OF IMMIGRATION PROGRAM

Written by on August 29, 2024

It seems like Canada is tired of being the promised land. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced a thorough examination of the temporary foreign workers programme (TFWP).
Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, recently stated that it’s time for the government to consider substantial reforms to their immigration policies, rather than just making superficial changes to address public opinion.
“Canada is implementing stricter regulations for low-wage temporary foreign workers,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced. “We’re limiting eligibility and reducing the number of workers in this category, except in essential sectors like healthcare, construction, and food production.”

Starting September 26, the Ministry of Employment and Social Development will reject applications from low-wage temporary foreign workers in regions with 6% or higher unemployment rates. Additionally, employers will be allowed to hire only 10% of their workforce through this program, down from 20%. The maximum employment duration for such workers is also being cut in half to one year.
