Gunmen Launch Deadly Attack on Police Headquarters in Anambra, Nigeria
A group of armed men stormed the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, in the early hours of Tuesday, killing a police corporal and injuring others. The attackers, believed to be members of a secessionist group, threw explosives and petrol bombs at the police facility, causing fires in some offices and the nearby Oba Civic Centre.
According to eyewitnesses, the hoodlums arrived in large numbers and shot sporadically, attempting to gain entry into the police station. The police corporal who lost his life was fatally wounded in the attack.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that a joint security operation is underway to apprehend the perpetrators. Ikenga condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the nation’s security apparatus.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, also denounced the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The motive behind the attack is still unknown, but it is suspected to be linked to a secessionist group.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of police personnel and facilities in the region. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and to identify those responsible.
