NLC Threatens Strike Action Over Unpaid Minimum Wage

Written by on November 11, 2024

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to defaulting states, threatening imminent strike action if they fail to implement the new national minimum wage. The labor union expressed deep concern over the worsening economic conditions in the country and the government’s apparent disregard for the welfare of workers.

In a recent statement, the NLC highlighted the plight of Nigerian workers who continue to suffer from low wages and rising inflation. The union emphasized that the non-implementation of the new minimum wage is a direct violation of workers’ rights and a major contributor to the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.

To address the issue, the NLC has established a committee tasked with assessing the situation in each state and determining the appropriate course of action. The committee will identify states that have not complied with the minimum wage law and recommend industrial actions, including strikes, to pressure the defaulting governments.

The NLC’s demands extend beyond the implementation of the minimum wage. The union is also calling on the government to take urgent steps to alleviate economic hardship, protect Nigerians from poverty, and address the political crisis in Rivers State. The NLC has specifically demanded unfettered access to Rivers State’s revenue allocations, arguing that it is essential for the state’s development and the well-being of its citizens.

The NLC’s stance reflects the growing frustration of Nigerian workers who have been struggling to make ends meet amidst rising costs of living and stagnant wages. The union’s threat of strike action underscores the seriousness of the situation and the potential for widespread social unrest if the government fails to take immediate action.
