Nigeria Petrol Imports Rise as Local Output Falls

Written by on August 25, 2026

Nigeria’s petrol imports increased in July 2026 after domestic refining dropped sharply.

Total petrol supply fell 10% to 45.5 million litres a day, with local production down 21% to 25.8 million litres daily while imports rose 9% to 19.7 million litres.

The Dangote refinery still dominated, operating above 71% capacity and supplying about 25.9 million litres of petrol a day.

Crude intake by local plants also declined. Petrol consumption fell 25%, improving stock levels, though the figures show local output remains vulnerable to operational swings.
