Bill Gates Warns AI Could Permanently Wipe Out Many Jobs

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has cautioned that the rise of artificial intelligence could trigger one of the most turbulent periods in human history, with many jobs disappearing forever and governments lagging in preparation.
In a lengthy essay published on his Gates Notes website, Gates said AI may either become the greatest equaliser or the worst source of inequality, depending on how societies respond. Unlike past tech shifts, AI spreads rapidly because it runs on existing devices and uses natural language.
He highlighted particular risks to entry- and mid-level roles in sales, customer support, software engineering and paralegal work, with robotics later threatening blue-collar jobs in construction and hospitality.
Gates also flagged dangers including cyberattacks, disinformation and potential loss of control over powerful systems.
While noting AI’s potential to boost healthcare, agriculture, education and clean energy especially for poorer countries he stressed these benefits are not automatic. He called for urgent new national and international frameworks involving governments, businesses, workers and communities to manage the transition.
