Freetown, Sierra Leone: Sierra Leonean authorities have formally charged 12 individuals with treason and related offenses, accusing them of involvement in a failed coup attempt on November 26, 2023.
The accusations stem from a series of attacks targeting security installations, including an armoury, barracks, prisons, and police stations. Clashes with security forces ensued, ultimately thwarting the attempt.
Among the charged individuals is Amadu Koita, a former soldier and bodyguard of ex-President Ernest Koroma. Widely known for his vocal criticism of the current government led by President Julius Bio on social media, Koita is described by authorities as a key organizer of the alleged coup attempt. He was arrested on December 4, alongside 84 others, mainly military personnel, also detained in connection with the incident.
