Obaseki Urges Calm, Condemns Electoral Impunity in Edo State.

Written by on September 23, 2024

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has called on citizens to remain calm and refrain from violence in response to the declaration of Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner of the recent governorship election.

In a televised address, Obaseki expressed disappointment over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) announcement, which declared Okpebholo as the winner with 291,667 votes, ahead of Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes.

The Governor hinted that the PDP would challenge the election results through lawful and democratic means, stating that the party would seek a resolution to what he described as a “blatant disregard for law and process.”

“It is clear to the least discerning the level of impunity and reckless disregard for due process in this election,” Obaseki remarked. He urged Edo citizens not to resort to violence, emphasizing that peace and justice would prevail in the end.

“The power of democracy lies in the people’s right to choose their leaders,” he said, adding that the alleged subversion of this right was “not just a tragedy, but a travesty of democracy.”

Obaseki acknowledged the disillusionment among Edo citizens following the September 21st election, noting that many felt powerless against the institutions meant to protect them. However, he reiterated his call for calm, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities while the PDP pursues its case through democratic channels.

“Peace and justice will always win in the end,” Obaseki assured the people, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their wellbeing and security.
