Nigeria and Egypt Strengthen Diplomatic Ties, Cooperation

Nigeria and Egypt have agreed to enhance their diplomatic relationship and establish a comprehensive partnership aimed at addressing shared challenges and fostering development. The agreement was reached during the third round of political consultations between Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Badr Abdelatty, Egyptian Foreign Minister, in Cairo, Egypt.

– *Comprehensive Partnership*: Egypt and Nigeria have agreed to elevate their relationship to a comprehensive partnership, emphasizing mutual respect for each nation’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
– *Economic Cooperation*: The two countries will focus on boosting trade and investment, particularly in agriculture, energy, telecommunications, and infrastructure. They aim to increase bilateral trade and investment, with Egypt’s ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Fouad, noting that the current trade volume between the two countries is relatively low, at $190 million as of 2023.
– *Nigeria-Egypt Chamber of Commerce*: The chamber will be established by 2025 to promote trade and investment between the two countries, providing a platform for business-to-business interactions and fostering economic growth.
– *Security Cooperation*: Both nations have pledged to strengthen their partnership on counter-terrorism efforts, sharing intelligence and strategies to combat rising insurgencies and extremism in the region ¹ ².
*Strengthening People-to-People Connections*
As part of the agreement, Nigeria and Egypt have waived visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders and adjusted visa fees for citizens, aiming to facilitate greater mobility and foster stronger people-to-people connections.
