Academic activities at the University of Calabar have been disrupted as students vehemently protest a 100% increase in tuition fees. The University has implemented a revised fee schedule effective for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
In response to this significant fee hike, students have organized peaceful demonstrations to express their disapproval. Their actions include barricading roads leading to the campus, effectively barring entry for staff and disrupting normal operations.
The students’ discontent stems from the substantial financial burden imposed by the tuition fee increase. They argue that the hike places undue strain on their families and jeopardizes their ability to continue their education.
The university administration has yet to formally address the students’ grievances. However, the ongoing protests are gaining momentum, highlighting the depth of students’ frustration and their resolve to seek a resolution.
