Written by on January 17, 2024

Tragedy struck the heart of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Tuesday, as an explosion rocked the Bodija area, leaving a trail of devastation and unanswered questions. Preliminary investigations by security agencies have attributed the blast to explosive devices stored by illegal miners, raising concerns about safety and illegal activities within the city.

At least 10 lives were tragically lost, and 15 others injured due to the explosion, which also caused significant damage to surrounding buildings. Notably, the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and even the residence of former Attorney General Chief Bola Ige were impacted.

Governor Seyi Makinde, who rushed to the scene soon after the incident, addressed the public, stating that while investigations are ongoing, “anyone found culpable will be brought to book.” The Governor’s firm stance assures the community that authorities are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for those affected.

This incident underscores the urgency of addressing illegal mining activities and upholding safety regulations. Public outcry demands a thorough investigation to understand the extent of the illegal operation and its connection to the tragedy. As Ibadan grapples with grief and recovers from the damage, Governor Makinde’s vow to hold those responsible accountable offers a glimmer of hope for a safer future.
