Tinubu Urges NLNG to End Gas Flaring, Boost Domestic Benefits

President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigeria LNG (NLNG) to maximise the economic value of the country’s gas reserves instead of allowing them to be wasted through flaring.
Speaking at the State House on Wednesday while receiving the NLNG Board, led by Managing Director Adeleye Falade, Tinubu stressed the need for greater domestic utilisation of gas.
He said the company must convert the environmental liability of flaring into strategic and economic gains for Nigerians, while also improving local energy supply and pricing so ordinary citizens feel the impact.
Nigeria flared 203.9 billion standard cubic feet of gas in 2025 up from 192.9 billion scf in 2024 representing 7.54% of total production of about 2.71 trillion scf, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. Overall utilisation remained above 92%.
Falade reported that NLNG has generated over 150 billion dollars since inception, with shareholders (including Nigeria’s 49% stake) receiving about $47 billion in dividends.
Operations have improved to five of six trains following higher oil production. All LPG (cooking gas) output currently goes to the domestic market.
